National Laboratory of Biomacromolecules
Introduction
Founded in 1989, the National Laboratory of Biomacromolecules (NLB) carries out cutting-edge research on the structures and functions of membrane protein, chromatin structure, epigenetic regulation and cell fate determination, regulation mechanisms of the formation and maintenance of an intracellular membrane system, and the protein structure and functional basis of disease occurrence and defense. The lab has 184 members, including eight academicians, 15 distinguished youths and three outstanding youths.
In previous evaluations, the laboratory has twice won the "Advanced Group of the National Key Laboratory Program" (Golden Bull Award). Since its establishment, it has won seven second prizes in the National Natural Science Awards; four first prizes and three second prizes in the Natural Science Awards of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; and four first prizes and two second prizes in the Beijing Science and Technology Awards.
Major research areas
On the basis of continuing development and furthering knowledge in this discipline, the laboratory focuses on the key area of biological macromolecule structure and function research, strives to develop and cultivate new research areas, and adjusts, enriches and optimizes its team according to research needs. Research directions with distinctive features, advantages, and competitiveness have been adopted:
1. The protein structure and functional basis of disease occurrence and defense
Carry out molecular mechanism research on the process of invasion, replication, and pathogenicity of viruses and pathogens of major hazards, emerging diseases and virulent infectious diseases; at the molecular level, elucidate the interaction of viruses, pathogen protein and host, and the mechanism of immune defense and drug resistance, provide new solutions for the development of early diagnosis and prevention strategies.
2. Molecular mechanism of chromatin structure, epigenetic regulation and cell fate determination
Study the molecular mechanisms of chromatin assembly and distribution, modification and interpretation, and the formation and regulation of higher-level structures; study the mechanisms of epigenetic regulation of stem cell development and differentiation and disease occurrence.
3. Regulation mechanism of the formation and maintenance of intracellular membrane system
Identify new factors for morphogenesis of the intracellular membrane system and reveal its molecular mechanism; elucidate the process and regulatory mechanism of intermembrane fusion in the intracellular membrane system.
4. Structures and functions of membrane protein
Study the molecular mechanism of cell membrane formation and transport; analyze the structure and function of important membrane proteins in the process of photosynthesis, light harvesting and light energy conversion, and mitochondrial energy metabolism.
5. Protein synthesis and regulation
Study the molecular mechanisms regulating the gene transcription, mRNA processing, and protein translation; nascent peptide chain folding and quality control during protein synthesis; and molecular mechanisms of protein folding, related human diseases, and intervention strategies.
