Xian-En Zhang received his first degree in Hubei University in 1982, later received MPhil. (microbiology, 1985) and Ph.D. (biochemistry, 1995) in the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS), and Honorary Doctor of Science Degree of Science from University of Alberta, Canada (2015). He became a full professor in Wuhan Institute of Virology, CAS in 1993. He is specializing in biosensors, nanobiology and molecular/cellular imaging, and use them to elucidate the basic problems in cell biology and biomedicine. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed papers and three books on biosensors and biochips.
His academic activities include: Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), member of the permanent organizing committee of the World Congress on Biosensors, founding co-chair of the Division of Nanobiotechnology/Biosensors/Biochips, Asian Federation of Biotechnology (AFOB), Vice President of Chinese Society of Biotechnology, Chair of the Division of Synthetic Biology and the Honorary Chair of the Division of Biosensors/Biochip/Nanobiotechnology.
He serves as the member of editorial board or advisory board of the academic journals Biosensors & Bioelectronics, SCIENCE CHINA-Life Sciences, mLife, Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Synthetic Biology, Biocatalysis & Biotransformation, Advanced Biosystems, Chinese Journal of Biotechnology, Chemical Journal of Chinese Universities, BioDesign Research, etc.
He was awarded the CAS Award of Young Scientists (1989), CAS Young-middle Age Outstanding Contribution Expert (1994), the First Prize of the Natural Science of Hubei Province (2015).
